In a swift policy turnaround, the Alberta government has ordered the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) to reverse its recent hike in minimum alcohol prices at bars and restaurants.

The change follows heated opposition to the increase, which had raised the minimum price of a pint of beer from $3.20 to $5.00 – the first adjustment in nearly two decades.

Industry leaders and local officials, including Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas, argued that the hike would harm businesses and patrons alike, especially with the Calgary Stampede on the horizon.

Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally rescinded the price hike, citing the need for stability for Alberta’s hospitality sector, which is vital for jobs and tourism.

While advocates say minimum pricing curbs excessive drinking, others warn it hurts businesses and moderate consumers.

The rollback highlights Alberta’s ongoing struggle to balance economic growth with responsible alcohol policies.
