Total lunar eclipse and lunar eclipse viewing in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Experience the awe of a blood moon at this special celestial event

Edmontonians are in for a celestial treat as a total lunar eclipse, commonly known as a blood moon, graces the early morning skies on March 3, 2026.

This rare event offers a unique opportunity for lunar eclipse viewing enthusiasts to witness the moon bathed in a deep red hue.

The eclipse will commence at 1:44 a.m. local time, with totality beginning at 4:04 a.m. and lasting approximately 58 minutes.

The entire event, including partial phases, will conclude by 7:20 a.m.

For those eager to experience this phenomenon firsthand, the TELUS World of Science in Edmonton is hosting a free public viewing event.

Starting at 2:00 a.m., attendees can gather in Coronation Park, adjacent to the science center, where telescopes will be set up for optimal viewing.

Experts from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (Edmonton Centre) will be on hand to guide observers through the various phases of the eclipse.

It's important to note that the event is weather-dependent.

Current forecasts indicate cloudy conditions with temperatures around -5°C (23°F) during the eclipse hours.

Attendees are advised to dress warmly and prepare for potential light snow.

In the event of overcast skies, the eclipse may not be visible.

For those unable to attend the public viewing or if weather conditions are unfavorable, several online platforms will be streaming the eclipse live.

This ensures that everyone has the chance to witness this remarkable event, regardless of location or local weather.

As this is the last total lunar eclipse visible in North America until December 31, 2028, it's an event not to be missed.

Whether you're a seasoned astronomer or a casual stargazer, the upcoming blood moon promises to be a memorable spectacle in Edmonton's night sky.
