Edmonton's culinary landscape is rich with family-owned establishments that have become cornerstones of the community.

Among these, the Quon family stands out for their enduring contributions to the city's dining scene.

For over seven decades, the Quons have been at the helm of The Lingnan, a restaurant renowned for its authentic Chinese cuisine and warm hospitality.

Established in 1947, The Lingnan has evolved under the family's stewardship, blending tradition with innovation to remain a beloved destination for generations of Edmontonians.

In addition to The Lingnan, the Quons operated Chicken for Lunch, a popular downtown eatery known for its generous portions and friendly service.

After 32 years, owner Amy Quon decided to close the establishment in February 2024, citing personal health reasons and upcoming renovations in the food court where it was located.

Regular patrons fondly recall Amy's personalized service, where she often remembered customers' names and orders, fostering a sense of community.

Beyond their culinary ventures, the Quon family's daily hard work and dedication captured national attention, leading to their own television shows on the Food Network, including "Family Restaurant: The Quons" and "The Quon Dynasty."

These series offered viewers an intimate look into the challenges and triumphs of running a family restaurant, further endearing the Quons to audiences across Canada.

Edmonton's dining scene has also seen other notable family-owned establishments making significant impacts.

The Zenari family, for instance, reopened their café, Zenari's Little Italy, inside Zocalo Greenhouse in November 2025, after closing their downtown restaurant in 2024.

This new venture marks a return to their roots, offering a cozy spot for coffee and snacks, and reconnecting with long-time patrons.

Similarly, the Leitch family, owners of the beloved Patricia Street Deli in Jasper, relocated to Edmonton after their original establishment was destroyed in the 2024 wildfire.

They reopened in December 2025, bringing the essence of their Jasper eatery to a new audience in the city.

However, the restaurant industry has faced challenges as well.

After 43 years on Whyte Avenue, Continental Treat Fine Bistro closed its doors in August 2025, with the owners citing rising food costs and safety concerns in the area.

Despite these closures, new family-owned establishments continue to emerge, contributing to the city's vibrant food culture.

In December 2024, Boa and Hare opened in Chinatown, aiming to be a catalyst for positive change in the neighborhood.

Co-owned by siblings Winnie and William Chen, along with business partner Wilson Wong, the restaurant seeks to attract younger clientele and revitalize the area.

Another addition to Chinatown is Little Bon Bon, an ice cream parlour and café opened by Ailynn and Jason Wong in June 2024.

Located in the historic Hull Block, Little Bon Bon aims to bring positive energy to the neighborhood and build upon the family's long history in Canadian hospitality.

These stories underscore the resilience and dedication of Edmonton's family-owned restaurants.

Through generations, families like the Quons have not only provided delicious meals but have also fostered community connections, contributing to the city's rich cultural tapestry.

As the culinary landscape continues to evolve, the legacy of these family establishments remains a testament to the enduring spirit of Edmonton's food scene.
