Oilers 50/50 Raffle Fuels Community Support for Food Banks and Local Butchers

Edmontonians Embrace 'Shopping for Good' Amid Rising Beef Prices

The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) has launched the 'Feeding Oil Country' 50/50 raffle, running until December 31, to support families facing food insecurity through organizations like Food Banks Alberta, Edmonton's Food Bank, and Second Harvest.

Corey Smith, Board Chair of EOCF, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "With need at an all-time high, your support will help ensure families have warm meals, children receive the nutrition they need, and surplus food is redirected to those who need it most."

In response to this campaign, a 'shopping for good' trend has emerged in Edmonton. Local butchers, such as D'Arcy's Meat Market, have reported an increase in customers purchasing 'Freezer Packs' to donate to food banks or to stock up for their own families. These packs offer a variety of meats at competitive prices, providing value amid rising beef costs.

For instance, D'Arcy's Meat Market offers a 14-pound Super Saver Beef Pack, including AAA Top Sirloin Steak, Baron of Beef Roast, All Beef Sausage, Lean Ground Beef, Beef Bacon, and All Beef Pepperoni or Hot Dogs. They also provide an 18-pound Super Saver Mixed Pack with a selection of beef, pork, chicken, and eggs. These packs are designed to help families manage the rising cost of groceries and utilities.

Additionally, Edmonton Custom Packers, a family-owned butcher shop since 1974, offers a wide variety of beef and pork selections, both smoked and fresh. Their products are gluten-free, preservative-free, and made in-house, catering to health-conscious consumers.

The combination of the Oilers' 50/50 raffle and the community's proactive approach to supporting local food banks highlights Edmonton's spirit of generosity and resilience. As beef prices are projected to rise in the New Year, these initiatives provide a practical way for residents to contribute to their community while managing their own household needs.

For those interested in participating, the 'Feeding Oil Country' 50/50 raffle offers 70 prizes, including premium Oilers tickets, signed merchandise, and more. Tickets can be purchased online, with proceeds directly benefiting local food banks and related organizations.

By engaging in these community-driven efforts, Edmontonians are not only addressing immediate food insecurity but also strengthening the bonds that make their city a compassionate and supportive place to live.
