Duchess Bake Shop, a cornerstone of Edmonton's culinary landscape, has recently expanded its presence on 124th Street, further enriching the city's vibrant food scene. Since its inception in 2009, this beloved pastry shop has been synonymous with quality and craftsmanship, offering an array of French-inspired delights that have captivated locals and visitors alike.

In 2023, the owners of Duchess Bake Shop took a significant step by purchasing the building that housed their original storefront, along with an adjacent property. This strategic acquisition effectively doubled their interior space, allowing for a comprehensive renovation aimed at consolidating operations and enhancing the customer experience. Co-owner Garner Beggs emphasized the long-term vision behind this move, stating, "When I conceived of Duchess, it was always going to be a long-term, permanent fixture of the city."

The expansion has not only provided more room for patrons to enjoy their favorite pastries but has also enabled the bake shop to broaden its offerings. The menu continues to feature signature items such as croissants, macarons, and the renowned Duke Cake, all crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Additionally, the increased space has facilitated the introduction of new products and services, including an expanded selection of baking classes and special occasion orders.

The growth of Duchess Bake Shop mirrors the dynamic evolution of 124th Street, which has become a hub for local businesses and cultural events. The area has seen a surge in new establishments, including the plant-based café kb & co, which opened its eighth franchise location on 124th Street in 2024. This influx of diverse businesses has contributed to the street's reputation as one of Edmonton's premier shopping and dining destinations.

Community events have also played a pivotal role in revitalizing the area. In late 2024, the 124 Street business community introduced Glowscape 124, an illuminated art experience that transformed vacant commercial spaces into vibrant art installations. This event, held from November 16 to December 1, attracted numerous visitors and showcased the creative spirit of the neighborhood.

Infrastructure improvements have further enhanced the appeal of 124th Street. The City of Edmonton's renewal project, nearing completion as of early 2026, has focused on upgrading road surfaces, sidewalks, and streetscaping features. These enhancements aim to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment, benefiting both businesses and patrons.

The expansion of Duchess Bake Shop is emblematic of the broader growth and revitalization occurring along 124th Street. As new businesses emerge and community initiatives flourish, the area continues to solidify its status as a vibrant and essential part of Edmonton's urban fabric. For those seeking a delightful pastry experience, Duchess Bake Shop remains a must-visit destination, now with even more to offer.
