The Return of the Italian Centre "Piazza"

Teresa Spinelli's Bold Move to Preserve Little Italy's Heart

Teresa Spinelli, the dedicated owner of the Italian Centre Shop, has taken a significant step to safeguard the essence of Little Italy by acquiring The Piazza property.

This strategic move ensures that the Italian Centre Shop will continue to serve as the neighborhood's cornerstone for generations to come.

Spinelli's decision to purchase The Piazza was driven by a deep commitment to the community.

She recognized the potential risk of an external buyer who might not align with the neighborhood's values.

By stepping in, she has preserved a vital community asset.

The Piazza, located at 108th Avenue and 95th Street, has been a hub of activity in Little Italy.

It houses unique shops and services such as Paper Birch Books, Earth's Refillery Coop, True Blue Barber Shop, and Culina Famiglia.

The large, paved front area has also been the setting for numerous local events, including Winter in Little Italy and the Hello Market pop-ups.

Spinelli's acquisition comes at a crucial time.

The McCauley Development Cooperative, which purchased The Piazza in January 2020, faced financial challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the cooperative on the verge of receivership, Spinelli's intervention ensures that the original investors will recoup their investments.

Looking ahead, Spinelli plans to revitalize the surrounding square starting this spring.

She is actively seeking to fill the final available bay with a community-focused business and urges everyone to continue supporting the local businesses in The Piazza.

In a related development, the Little Italy community is set to host an Italian festival in East Portal Park in May 2026.

This festival aims to celebrate the rich Italian heritage of the district and will feature various cultural events and activities.

Additionally, plans are underway to enhance the neighborhood with Italian stripes on crosswalks, street poles, and fire hydrants, further emphasizing the area's cultural identity.

Spinelli's actions reflect a profound dedication to preserving and enhancing the cultural fabric of Little Italy.

Her commitment ensures that the Italian Centre Shop and The Piazza will remain integral parts of the community, fostering a vibrant and inclusive environment for all.
